Chia Seed Sensory Garden

A cool, slippery garden invitation for scooping, planting, transferring and imaginative small-world play.

Adult prep: 5 minutesChill 2 hours or overnightBest for ages 3+

What you need

  • ¼ cup chia seeds
  • 2 cups water
  • A large bowl and spoon
  • A shallow tray or sensory bin
  • Silk flowers, large leaves or chunky garden toys
  • Cups, scoops, spoons and child-safe tongs
  • A wipe-clean mat or towel

Make the chia gel

  1. Combine ¼ cup chia seeds with 2 cups water.
  2. Stir well, wait 10 minutes, then stir again to break up clumps.
  3. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours; overnight gives the thickest texture.
  4. Spoon the gel into a shallow tray just before play.

Build and play

  1. Place flowers, leaves and chunky garden pieces beside the tray.
  2. Invite your child to “plant” and pull out the flowers.
  3. Scoop the gel into cups, transfer it between containers and make garden paths.
  4. Talk about the slippery, bumpy, cool texture and count or sort the flowers.
  5. Finish by collecting the pieces and helping wipe the play space.
